happy cinco de mayo (a week late)

We went to a Cinco de Mayo concert at the Minneota high school last week. I brought along my niece, Brooke, to help out with the kids and a good time was had by all. I gotta say - I was quite impressed. They had yummy Mexican food, and the place was filled with Cinco de Mayo themed art-work.

About half-way through the concert, a group of junior high girls got a hold of Sam and I didn't have to worry about him the rest of the evening (although if this pattern keeps up, I'll have plenty to worry about in about 15 years). I would occasionally check in on him, overhearing lots of "I wanna hold him next!" and "You had him already!"s.

Elena had a blast listening to the music, dancing and walking up and down the bleacher steps. She often attempts to make new friends when she sees other children in public, and the concert was no exception. Unfortunately, given her 2-year-old socialization skills, she's not quite sure how to effectively start up a conversation with strange children. She usually resorts to bringing her face within about 2 inches of the other kid's and just smiles at them while they look increasingly uncomfortable. She reminds me of that kid in A Christmas Story who keeps trying to talk to Ralphie in line to see Santa. "I like the wizard of oz...."
